Reconstruction, Beck Effects and Wh-phrases in Situ
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper argues that wh-in situ is interpreted in its original position. Focusing on the ambiguity of how many sentences, it shows that the semantic behavior of wh in-situ can be explained without postulating LF (phrasal) movement. It is then pointed out that the fact that wh-phrases in situ lack anti-reconstruction effects follows directly from this non movement approach. The paper also shows that certain intervention effects discussed by Beck do not necessarily present a problem to this approach. It is suggested that the intervention effects are due to a constraint on movement of `whfeatures', but not of `wh-phrases'.

Intervention Effects Follow from Focus Interpretation
The paper provides a semantic analysis of intervention effects in wh-questions. The interpretation component of the grammar derives uninterpretability, hence ungrammaticality, of the intervention data. In the system of compositional interpretation that I suggest, wh-phrases play the same role as focused phrases, introducing alternatives into the computation. Unlike focus, wh-phrases make no ord...
متن کاملWh-in-situ, from the 1980s to Now
This article provides an overview of the issues and proposals surrounding wh-insitu since the 1980s. In particular, it discusses the question of whether or not in-situ wh-phrases undergo covert wh-movement. Aside from reviewing the basic arguments for and against covert wh-movement, it considers alternative proposals put forth, ranging from movement of elements other than wh-phrases themselves,...
متن کاملFocus Intervention Effects in Questions
Introduction Beck (1996) and Beck & Kim (1997) discuss the interaction between wh-in-situ elements and quantifiers, and propose that an intervening quantifier blocks LF movement of wh-in-situ to an operator position. This “intervention effect” is further discussed by Pesetsky (2000) with reference to LF feature movement. Wh-intervention effects exist in a wide variety of languages (see e.g. Hoj...
متن کاملAn experimental investigation of interrogative syntax / semantics ∗
Current theories of interrogative syntax/semantics adopt two strategies for the interpretation of in-situ wh-phrases: covert movement and in-situ interpretation. The covert movement strategy is traditionally assumed to be all-or-nothing: the in-situ wh-phrase covertly moves to C or else stays in-situ and is interpreted in its base-generated position at LF. In this paper we argue that neither ap...
متن کاملAn argument/adjunct asymmetry in wh-questions
Contra previous uniform approaches for wh-phrases, the current paper argues that there is a clear asymmetry between in-situ argument and adjunct wh-phrases with respect to Intervention Effects (IEs) in Korean and Japanese. Based on the categorical (nominal vs. adverbial) dichotomy evidenced by structural case attachment tests and formation of complex wh-expressions, different base locations for...
